28 Aug The Evolution of The Employee
Employees were once thought of as expendable assets and easily replaceable to keep the wheels of the business turning.
However, the employee from ten years ago is no longer the same as the employees we are starting to see in the modern day and age.
So, what’s changed?
Anytime, anywhere
The idea of flexible work refers to working anytime, anywhere, and being essentially evaluated by what you produce, rather than how many hours you sit in a chair working. Long gone is the need for employees to work from an office or to work that 9-5 shift, as the idea of “agile working” becomes increasingly prominent in the modern workforce.
Goodbye, corporate ladder
Usually, when you begin to work for a company, you begin at the bottom of the corporate ladder, in which you then begin climbing over the next five years to be promoted into a position you are reasonably happy with. However, the corporate ladder has officially fallen over as the freelancer economy, collaboration platforms, and new management approaches take over.
Employees are now shaping their own career paths as companies slowly start to allow employees to choose their working preferences.
Sharing = Success
Do you remember when the secret of the trade was confidential information that you couldn’t share with other employees?
Employees used to have no encouragement to collaborate and share information with fellow employees, as their job was to simply show up and do what they are getting paid for. For the modern employee, they are doing the exact opposite. By collaborating with others, their productivity and creativity have increased exponentially as they are encouraged to communicate more than ever.
Everyone “knows”
Nowadays, knowledge is nothing more than a commodity as it is at everyone’s fingertips as they can simply look it up on their smartphones. What does this mean for the modern employee?
Knowledge is not the most important thing anymore, but the ability to learn, adapt and apply those learnings to real scenarios is now more valuable than ever.
A lot of aspects change over time; just as technology grows every day, so does the employee. Creating workplace environments and strategies to accommodate to the modern expectations and needs of employees is essential for the success of your business. As employees are adapting, your business must also adapt.
