Workplace Trends: What Needs to Stop

Many workplaces throughout the recent years are seeing a lot of various changes and trends influenced by the modern expectations of the workplace from the new industry generations.

So, what exactly are the trends that modern employees are creating that just need to stop?

  1. Multitasking
Multitasking sounds great and productive, until it is put into practice. As Millennials and other modern generations have grown up with technology at their fingertips, they have been provided with immediate information on demand. Thinking fast and working fast can create a high pace working ethic, luring individuals into the false mindset that they must complete as many things as possible at once, ultimately inhibiting each task.
  2. Relying solely on email communications
Modern employees are more comfortable with email and text communications rather than face-to-face interactions. This is fair, as it allows more time to put your thoughts together, however this trend is not taking into consideration traditional expectations of how others may wish to communicate.
  3. Being over confident
Confidence is good but exhibiting over-confidence can often be perceived as arrogance by traditional employers and colleagues. The trend of overestimating abilities is increasingly growing in the workplace; however, it is important to recognise those who have more experience and learn from them.
  4. Over-collaboration
The modern workplace environment is increasingly utilising Activity Based Working (ABW), and that’s not a bad thing. However, ABW is becoming a higher expectation from employees and somewhat taken for granted and abused to the point of “too much collaboration.” With too much collaboration, comes too much distraction, and results in decisions not being made.
