27 Jun Three tips for successful projects
Project Budget and Time Blowouts?
Do you currently have one, or possibly multiple, projects that are exceeding the allocated time and budget parameters, not to mention impacting the physical and mental capacity of your staff members?
Projects can be unruly and ravenous if managed incorrectly, ripping through budgets and timeframes to the detriment of the bottom line and sidestepping any kind of satisfactory outcome.
So, how can you support successful projects?
Know the Purpose
It may sound simple, yet project staff often don’t have clarity over the all-important ‘Why’ of the project. Without this comprehension, motivation and commitment wanes. Understanding the ‘Why’ and the way the project is designed to align with your organisation’s overall strategic plan will play a key part on the level of success. All project staff and stakeholders should possess a full understanding of how the project relates to organisational goals, strategies and market advancement.
Keep a grasp on reality
Emotions run high at the commencement of a major project. Whether positive or negative, stress or excitement, excessive emotion can cloud judgement and bias the project moving forward. Gaining a collective understanding and a clearly defined project pathway is vital to maintaining realistic expectations for the budget and schedule.
Define Responsibilities
Every project stakeholder should both serve a function and be aware of that function. Defining this allocation of responsibility at the outset of the project is paramount. Appointment of a defined Project Manager aids clarity and expedites key decision making.
Whatever your project, it must align with your organisational strategies, goals and mission statement. Without this alignment, the project its self may lose its importance as you lose sight of its purpose, hindering its outcome.
At Hubb Consultants, our question is, “What is the ‘Why’ for this project?”
